  2. Candide purchases the old woman, Cunégonde, and a small farm. Cunégonde reminds Candide of his promise to marry her. Though horrified by her ugliness, Candide does not dare refuse. However, the baron again declares that he will not live to see his sister marry beneath her rank.

  3. Candide, the baron, Pangloss, Martin and Cacambo had landed on the shore of the Sea of Marmora, at the house of the Prince of Transylvania. When they had first arrived the first thing they had seen was Cunegonde and the old woman hanging towels on a line dry.

"When Candide, the tender lover, saw his fair Cunegonde's weather-beaten face, bloodshot eyes, withered breasts, wrinkled cheeks and red, scaly arms, he recoiled three paces in horror, but then he stepped forward out off politeness." (115)

Cunegonde was no longer a true beauty. Cunegonde did not know she had become ugly, for no one had pointed it out to her.

  4. Endogamy at the time was being ridiculed.

When Candide informed the baron that he was going to marry his sister, the baron said, "No, my sister will never marry anyone but a baron of the Empire (115)."

The baron wouldn't allow Cunegonde to marry Candide because he was below their ranking. However, Cunegonde has become ugly and yet Candide is still willing to marry her. The baron should be glad that anyone would be willing to marry his sister.

  5. When Voltair mentions that they get to the house of the Prince of Transylvania he is still talking about phylosophy. He is trying to say that the men do not find the solution to their "phylosiphical problems"

  6. Cunegondes beauty is symbolizing Candides idea of how his life will be like with Cunegonde.

Cunegonde is perfect so if Candide stays with her his life will also be perfect and beautiful. Candide leaves his good life to go search for Cunegonde thinking she will still be as stunning like before. His hopes become broken when he discovers she is ugly.

  7. Candide's sudden interest in Cunegonde's beauty is satirizing Candides lose of innocence.
As he traveled he ran into allot of obstacle's that changed his view on what Dr. Pangloss taught him. They left each other with an innocent ignorant filled view of but Upon his return he saw everything with the hardened view of a sailor. I don't think Cunegonde was ever beautiful but Candide never saw it because he was blinded by his innocence.

  9. Satire:
Exaggeration-" The baron turned pale at this sight. When candide, the tender lover, saw his fair cunegonde's weather-beaten face. blood-shot eyes, withered breasts, wrinkled cheeks and red, scaly arms, he recoiled three paces in horror.(108)"
Irony-"I will never allow myself to be reproached with such a disgrace: my sister's childern could not enter the noble assemblies of germany.(109)"
    Message of Voltaire:
What voltaire is trying to say in this chapter is how when he meets cunegonde and how she looks and appers. The situation changes when candide asks the baron to marry his sister cunegonde and his offer is declined. What is being satierized is the love candide has for cunegonde.
